Better Battery Safety and User Experience with Accurate Fuel Gauges

Accurate battery state-of-charge (SOC), long runtime and shelf life, and safety are critical considerations when developing highly reliable Li+ battery-powered portable devices. This webinar explores how to address these challenges using one of Maxim’s latest highly integrated fuel gauges. By implementing the ModelGauge™ m5 EZ algorithm, this fuel gauge eliminates battery characterization for most popular Li+ cells, greatly improving time-to-market. The algorithm leads to an accurate prediction of SOC that improves the user experience as well as enhanced safety across a wide range of benign and harsh operating conditions. Furthermore, the low quiescent current of the IC allows for longer shelf life and longer run-time. Integration of fuel gauge, protection control, and authentication enhances safety and minimizes the bill-of-materials (BOM) and PCB area.

Speaker: Bakul Damle
Bakul Damle is a Business Director at Maxim Integrated, responsible for the battery management product line. His current interests include battery and power management such as fuel gauges, battery safety, protection, and authentication, wireless and USB Type-C/Power Delivery battery chargers. He joined Maxim in 2005 and is based in Dallas, Texas. Prior to Maxim, Bakul managed an engineering team at National Instruments in Austin, developing high-resolution computer-based instruments, and at Digitronics in Pune, India, in the area of power conversion. He holds a Master of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from California Institute of Technology and a Bachelor of Technology in Engineering Physics from the Indian Institute of Technology. Bakul has several patents in the area of test and measurement.
